2017 has been an incredible year for the art scene in Liverpool; from the Liver Bird wings by Paul Curtis to the dynamic Pier Head Art Fair, the city has been showered in talent. Here at Colu we are passionate about supporting the journeys of artists and helping in whatever way possible to provide valuable exposure to these creative communities, and one way we did in 2017 was through our design competition; Crafted in Liverpool.
Crafted in Liverpool, a competition dedicated to celebrating local artistic talents through their representations of the city of Liverpool and what it means to be part of the local community, was a big Colu highlight of 2017. Prizes included exhibiting the winning 4 entrants at the Liverpool Art Fair, printing the designs as the front of Colu flyers of which thousands are distributed around the city, vouchers at Rennie’s Arts & Crafts, 100 Local Pounds and £300 per winning entry.
Alongside 5 city influencers (Ngunan Adamu from BBC Merseyside, Alex Rose from USP Creative, Lucy Byrne from dot-Art, David Williams from Independent Liverpool, Sam Tawil from Bold Street Coffee, Mike Lawler from Baltic Creative and Leon Rossiter from Colu) we had the pleasure of witnessing firsthand the talent in Liverpool, and it was no easy task selecting the final four!

Once the four winners were selected, we then opened the voting for the People’s Choice Award, where around 400 of you voted to select your personal favourite representation of what it means to support local across Liverpool, with the winner being Julia Penlington’s City Centre who was rewarded with further Local Pounds to enjoy spending in locally owned, independent businesses to celebrate!
As the year draws to an end and with thousands of these pieces of art now proudly on display in around 200 independent businesses in Liverpool, we’re reminded about the importance of shopping locally, supporting local talent, and appreciating the special community we have here in Liverpool now more than ever. We hope you will support our #70MillionReasons campaign and support local talent and entrepreneurs when shopping for Christmas gifts.
